This is a great place with really great soft serve. We make this a regular stop the 2 or 3 times a year that we go through that area. The shop is adorable, with a couple of regular tables inside, plus one tall table and benches. Outside there are plenty of seats and an old railroad car to play in. The owner and all the staff are very nice and accommodating. We've come through with a big group of bicycle riders and they handle us all with smiles as well as when we come through with just my husband and I.

Returning from two nights' camping on Lake Pepin with our two kids we stopped in for a treat. Charming roadside place across from a rustic grain elevator, sporting an authentic caboose the kids can walk around in--beautifully decorated with a friendly upbeat and affable staff. Everything's just right except the ice cream. At least one other reviewer mentioned the soupy run-of-the-mill softserve they're dispensing. What a shame to waste such a great location on forgettable product. The proprietor delayed our kids' cones for the extruder to resume dispensing firmer dairy whip--but apparently that wasn't necessary for our turtle sundaes: delicious pecans, caramel, and whipped topping floating in flaccid softserve--topped with a candied maraschino. Amazing food served in a unremarkable place is still amazing. Unremarkable ice cream served in an amazing shop is just a cryin' shame. Get hand-scooped ice cream with some unique flavors and you'll have a treat worth stopping for.

Really good ice cream- a must stop for their fresh waffle cones!! AND they love dogs! Even have an area behind their shop to play and a kennel if you want to enjoy your ice cream without the "kids".

Been coming here since they opened. Best little ice cream place around!!! And owners Jim and Lorna are simply wonderful and do so much for the community! During my second pregnancy this place was my craving! Good eats and treats! Great customer service!

Cute ice cream stand in a tiny little town in rural Wisconsin. I was visiting my in-laws in Red Wing, MN on one of the hottest days of the year when we decided to go out and grab some ice cream. Great ice cream, super creamy soft serve - perhaps an acquired taste? The people running the place were really nice. Go out and support the small guys!

Flat Pennies Ice Cream will always have a special place in my wife's and my heart. This ice cream shop along the Mississippi, on the Great River Road, opened just a couple of weekends before my wife and I started riding again. This was a stop, and our turn around point, the first time we went riding the Great River Road. We stop for ice cream several times in the course of a riding season. The ice cream is wonderfully creamy and rich soft-serve, perfect for hot afternoon playing on the river. Jim & Lorna Ross' shop is family friendly, dog friendly, biker friendly, and just all together friendly. Flat Pennies just had a children's book published about his great business he's built which has received much recent fanfare. Yesterday while we were enjoying our ice cream in the sun outside on their tables, Jim was telling us about the book signing and 200 school children that showed up for ice cream. Stop by, grab an ice cream to cool off and recharge. If the shop is not too busy you will more than likely have an opportunity to engage in a wonderful conversation with the owners about their great business on the scenic Upper Mississippi River Valley.

On the way home from A to Z Produce, the gang decided we needed something sweet to top off our amazing pizza meal and pulled over at Flat Pennies for a quick ice cream. We walked up to the ordering window and starting asking a million questions....all of which were answered with a smile and an honest attempt to answer. A few of us ordered small turtle sundaes to share and we relaxed on an outside bench to wait for our order. Upon arrival, I quickly realized that this wasn't really a place for out-of-this world ice cream (since it ice cream itself was more like a space project....having the consistency of Styrofoam and tasting a bit like dried space food that we used to eat during the outer space lesson in Science class), but this is a great place to stop, get something to drink and relax before heading back out on the road. An extra bonus: Flat Penny also has a cool train car that you can explore and if you are lucky, you will get to try to pursued a conductor to blow the train horn as a train rushes by the ice cream shop.

OK...I'm a total geek with a pressed penny collection....you know those cool machines at tourist attractions that flatten a penny...so far my prized ones are from the Minnesota Get-Together and the Alamo....and now I have one from Bay City Wisconsin...so besides the cute cute name-they had pretty good soft serve with a great concept and theme revolving around railroads. Too bad my husband bought a black bandana that he thinks makes him look cool and now I don't think I'll ever get the dang thing off the guy's head...Good coffee too...even though I couldn't get a latte. I was able to get it with a "splash" of ice cream for 50 cents which was way better than half and half!!:) Cool place on the River Road! Go Wisconsin!
